Outsourcing is contracting with another company or person to do a particular function. Invariably, the function being outsourced is considered not to be a core business. A hospital, for example, can outsource its kitchen and room keeping functions to other companies/firms as this task is not related to the actual purposes of a hospital.
Outsourcing involves the transfer of the management and/or day-to-day execution of an entire service to a third party, commonly known as service providers. The client organization and the supplier enter into a contractual agreement that defines the transferred services. Under the agreement, the supplier acquires the means of production in the form of a transfer of people, assets and other resources from the client.
